Organizing Behind Closed Doors?

1 February 2010 No Comment

open doorWhile it is tempting to think that you can just close the closet doors or hide things in the back of the basement, our minds don’t let us forget about these less than orderly spaces in our home.  Every time you start looking for something and can’t find it, you may find yourself having to dig through these areas, because it is really unknown what’s in these spaces.  Unfortunately, when you need something it is often at a time that isn’t ideal for decluttering (like before vacation, picnics, tax time, etc.)

When you start the process of cleaning out these hidden and closed off spaces, consider the following:

1.  You may find a lot of repeats and duplicates.

People typically buy a lot of those items that they are drawn to, or items that they feel are always lost.  In these locations there can be 10 pairs of scissors, 50 rolls of wrapping paper, etc.  So, look for the repeat or duplicate items and group all of the like items together.

One of the benefits of finding these repeats is a sense of relief that you’ll have more than enough of these things when you need them, and can even consider donating the extras.

2.  You will find trash and empty boxes.

Yes, there will be some things in this space that can be pitched.  You’ve probably kept items too long and they are no good anymore.  Again, this can be a relief.  You might not have felt comfortable throwing them away before the expiration date or when they were in good condition, but now you can make the “no brainer” decision to let them go.

 3.  You will most likely find some regrets.

What is the reason you are avoiding this space?  Sometimes it is because you have made some bad purchasing decisions. Maybe you made a foolish purchase that you spent a little too much money on and didn’t return. Are there photographs you may be avoiding sorting through? Presents you received that you aren’t sure what to do with?  Take heart, when everything else is cleaned out there is less of this than you realize.

This is where a Professional Organizer is often necessary.  For you to make the right decisions and get through this type of clutter, it’s important to have someone help you through this stuff.

4.  You will LOVE the results.

So, why clean out the spaces behind closed doors?  Well, because your life will be better after you do.  Really.  Cleaning out this space will make you feel absolutely amazing.  Just like with exercise, the process itself can be work, but the results are worth all the effort.

After you get these spaces organized you’ll be surprised that when you need something next time (when in crisis mode), you’ll know just where to look and you’ll be very happy that you took the time to declutter (if only for YOU)!

So what secret hiding place are you going to start organizing? Leave me a comment below.

Simply yours,

Debbie
